What do you think about an Alice in Wonderland cake?

I've been looking online and in magazines at various styles of wedding cakes, and for whatever reason I really like the funky look of the Alice in Wonderland-type cakes.
Our colors are white, black, charcoal/silver, and red.
What is your opinion on that sort of "crooked" cake? Could a baker make it with buttercream icing (I personally hate fondant)? What color(s) should the icing be, or should it be pure white with the different designs?

I think that's a really cute idea!!

We have similar colors and I'm using a vanilla bean cake, raspberry filling, butter cream frosting! YUM!
